Dealing with boiler issues? You aren’t alone.

1. Water leaks and drips

Boiler leaks are typically caused by an issue with a pressure valve or a pump seal. When the pressure in your boiler system becomes too high, it can cause leaking. A worn-out pump seal can also cause your boiler to leak water. Pipe corrosion may also be the culprit behind your common boiler problems.

Your issue may even stem back further with the way your boiler was installed. If it was installed improperly or by inexperienced hands, this could be causing some of your issues. That’s why it’s crucial to recruit help from a technician that knows what they are doing.

2. Gurgling or whistling noises

Is your boiler emitting strange gurgling and whistling sounds? While it’s normal for your boiler to make some noise while operating, loud banging and whistling sounds could be indicative of something serious going on. These strange noises could be caused by a faulty pump, low water pressure, or “kettling.” Kettling is a common issue with boilers that results when mineral deposits start to form and accumulate in the heat exchanger.

3. No power

If your boiler won’t turn on, you should first check to see if other appliances in your house are also having trouble powering up. If so, there might be an issue with your fuse box. Some boilers may turn on, only to suddenly turn off out of nowhere. This may occur if there is a blockage in the system or if your system has low pressure. You will need to repressurize your boiler if its pressure gauge is below 1.

4. Frozen condensate pipe

This issue is common during the winter months, as the condensate moving in your system’s pipes can freeze, thereby causing a serious blockage. If your condensate is fitted externally or placed in an area that doesn’t get much heat, it is at increased risk of freezing. When left untreated, a frozen condensate pipe can cause your entire boiler system to break down.

5. Inaccurate thermostat reading

Is your boiler’s thermostat giving you an inaccurate reading? Is it shutting your system on and off? Malfunctioning thermostats are normal in boilers and can be caused by age or loose wiring.

Make sure you check the batteries on your thermostat, as a low charge could also be behind your boiler issues! Accidentally bumping the thermostat can also cause it to give you inaccurate readings. Simply adjust your thermostat and place it closer to your boiler.

6. Heating not working

In particularly unfortunate situations, your boiler may stop working altogether. This could be caused by a broken thermostat, low pressure, faulty valves, or broken system diaphragms. Failing to regularly check and maintain your boiler system can also lead to serious issues like a complete shutdown.
