At Restano, Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing, we understand how frustrating git can be when you experience a water leak in your home. We’ve put together a few tips on how to identify a water leak so you can contact the plumbers at Restano to get your Pittsburgh home repaired. Knowing how to identify a water leak will allow you to get repairs quickly and avoid further damage to your home. Below we’ve included six methods that can help you identify a water leak.
You can check the toilet for leaks by first removing the top of the tank and listening for any hissing noises. If you hear the hissing, try to locate where the hissing is coming from and check to see if you can fix it or if you will need to call a plumber. Be sure to check all other toilets in the home to make sure there are no other leaks.

In some cases, the pressure relief valves are plumbed directly into you a drain and could be leaking without you knowing. If you are unable to remove the drain pipe to look for a leak, try listening for a hissing sound that could indicate leaking from your hot water heater.
To locate a leak by your house, check all the hose-bibs (pipes that you attach a hose to). Most homes have at least two, one in the front and one in the back of the house. When the hose bibs have been located, use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope to listen for any sound coming from the bib. Place the tip of the screwdriver on the metal section of the hose bib and put your thumb knuckle on the top of the screwdriver.
Place your thumb knuckle on the side of your head and right in front of your ear. This will allow the sound to travel directly to your eardrum. If you find that the sound gets louder at any of the other hose-bibs, this indicates that the leak is closer to that unit. You can perform this inspection on the faucets and other fittings inside the home as well.
